about the ladies

The Golden Girls was a fabulously fresh show that aired from 1985-1992 with seven glorious, honest, hilarious seasons. This show showed us a group of older women who were still living and living well. They were great friends to each other and to the audience.

The relationships in the show were a central fixture and what had many viewers in love with this show. The characters of Dorothy Zbornak and Sophia Petrillo were particularly hilarious together. Their relationship as mother and daughter was both loving and sarcastic, but most of all, real.

Dorothy and Sophia shared a strong bond that was often buried beneath the surface, even Dorothy had trouble realizing that she was "Ma's favorite" and most admired. Even though her sister Gloria married well and her brother Phil always received help and support from Sophia. Dorothy was the one who was the strongest and most accomplished. And Sophia admired that.

Sophia was a strong woman herself, and worked very hard to provide a great life for her family. Even in hard times, she managed to make the best of it and give her children the best memories.

These two ladies, together, were fantastic. They shared much harsh banter, but also a lot of love and respect for one another. Their constant feuding over "Shady Pines" and Dorothy's being a pregnant teen, keep their relationship lively and humorous. But in between all of that, there is true love and much heart.
